Reflecting and Re-calibrating

I want to use this medium to hold myself accountable to DAILY ACTION with the goal to continuously discover, define, reflect, and maximize my life output both personally and professionally.  Hopefully I can converge on a single format, but on today's post I will dictate the things that have given me motivation as I start the day.

Family - In this section I will post a goal or some reflection / realization I want to articulate about the people I love.  Today, I am excited about starting Aiden on his quest to athletic STARDOM with his soccer meet and greet!  I am also proud at how the kids have been transitioning into their new school routines.  Their bravery, happy spirit, and genuine love inspire me to be a better human daily.

People - A common theme to understand an individuals tendencies (positive or negative) is to evaluate the people they surround themselves with (you are the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with).  Since I have not been successful at creating a regular group of individuals I can talk to weekly (like a master mind), for now I will use professional role models that I currently find inspirational:

  • Naval Ravikant, because every time he talks I feel like I get smarter.  He is great at taking complicated and abstract topics and making them simple.
  • Ray Dalio, because of his analytical and practical way of learning.  He's developed a statistical model, protocols, and habits on how to continuously improve.
  • Reid Hoffman, because he is seems so approachable and relatable.  He makes you feel like you can do anything.
  • Thomas Tungus / Fred Wilson, because I want to think like a VC.
  • Tim Ferris, because his intellectual curiosity is contagious and his "lifestyle design" is all about prescriptive action.

I think my goal for this journal section will be to post one thing (daily) that I have observed from studying each one.

Podcasts - I try to start most mornings with a podcast and it usually sets the tone for my actions that day.  I try to blend both entertainment and business.  This is just a dump of what I am currently subscribing to:

  • Tim Ferris
  • 20MinuteVC
  • Nathan Latka
  • Masters of Scale
  • Containers
  • Jim Rome
  • OrangeBloods

I think the goal of this journal section will be to post one thing (daily) that I took away from a podcast I listen to.

Daily quote - I want to publish one quote / concept (daily or weekly) where I can currently finding inspiration.  Today, it's Ray Dalio about "meaningful purpose and meaningful relationships":

I want an idea meritocracy. I want independent thinkers who are going to disagree. The most important things I want are meaningful work and meaningful relationships. And I believe that the way to get those is through radical truth and radical transparency.
Meaningful work is being on a mission that you're excited about and that you can get your head into. And in meaningful relationships you can be totally transparent with each other, letting each other know what your weaknesses are.
Wouldn't you rather have an idea meritocracy than the emotional barriers that a lot of people have? Your logical self wants it, and your emotional self doesn't. And through exercise, through practice, you can bring those things into alignment. And then you can get truth.

Daily Action - In this section I will list the actions that I will take today to continuously discover, define, reflect, and maximize my life output.

  • Start a daily journal
  • Incorporate Ray Dalio's failure process (or reflection process) daily starting 9/18
